S. Food and Drug Administration approved a drug to treat erectile dysfunction in men with a family history of heart disease and a history of prostate cancer and blood pressure problems, the agency said Wednesday.
The FDA issued the drug a year ago to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition in which the penis does not fully fill with enough blood to cause sexual stimulation. The drug is being developed by a company called Lilly.
“This is a good first step,” said Dr. David Kopple, a physician and neurologist at Johns Hopkins. “If this drug works, we want to know that, and we’re committed to doing that.”
The FDA has not made clear whether the drug was approved for erectile dysfunction, but said it is not expected to affect a patient’s sexual function.
Kopple said Lilly’s approval came just four months after a study showed that it was safe to use for treating erectile dysfunction, but not for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The study was published in the June 2 edition of theJournal of Sexual Medicine, which compared Viagra to placebo.
The FDA has not approved Viagra for use in men with pulmonary arterial hypertension, but the drug’s maker, Pfizer, says it is approved for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Pfizer says the study did not show that the drug could increase blood pressure, but said it did not recommend the drug for patients who are at risk for vascular disease.
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998. It has been available in generic form since 2003, and the drug now costs $2.50 a tablet. Viagra is available in 50 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg doses.
Patients who have used Viagra may experience lower blood pressure and lower their risk of stroke and heart attack, the FDA said.
Citing safety concerns, the FDA said it will not approve Viagra for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The FDA said it has not approved Viagra for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The FDA said Viagra is not approved for treating erectile dysfunction, but it is not expected to increase the risk of vascular disease.
FDA statement on Viagra:“The safety and efficacy of Viagra have not been established in humans and/or in animal models.”“This drug does not produce or be used in humans by or for any purpose other than the indication for which it is approved,” said FDA spokesman David J. Houghton.

Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. The main function of this medication is to increase the levels of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).
